President Yoweri Museveni has authorised the reopening of Nation Media Group’s news outlets in Uganda, a month after he ordered them shut down, Taifa Group announced in a statement.
The company, through its subsidiary Taarifa Limited, is the majority shareholder of the Nairobi-based conglomerate.
Taifa Group Chairman Rostam Azizi said the company was “honoured by this decision” and would remain steadfast in its commitment to Uganda’s socio-economic development through responsible investment, long-term partnerships and sustainable value creation.
“As the majority shareholder of Nation Media Group, we fully support the Group’s commitment to fair, balanced, independent and responsible journalism that informs, educates and contributes positively to public discourse,” he said.
“We share the Group’s core mission of positively influencing society and believe that a strong, professional and responsible media plays an important role in supporting national development, good governance and regional integration.”
Staff at NMG outlets in Kampala, under siege by security forces since the shutdown, have been told in a circular seen by OJ-UGANDA that they will be working remotely until the premises have been inspected and cleared for use by management.
However, those based at Commercial Plaza in central Kampala can resume working on the premises.
President Museveni’s son and army chief, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced the closure of Daily Monitor and its sister broadcasters—NTV, Spark TV, KFM and Ddembe FM—saying the decision to shut down the outlets had been approved by his father.
He and his father accuse the outlets of being biased.
The June shutdown has been the longest, with the previous two—in October 2002 and May 2013—lasting a week or days.
Daily Monitor was launched in July 1992 and has been instrumental in exposing repression, human rights abuses by the state and corruption in high places.

Taifa Group today announced the resumption of Nation Media Group’s operations in Uganda following authorisation by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The decision marks an important milestone for regional investment, media development and East African integration. Through its subsidiary, Taarifa Limited, Taifa Group is the majority shareholder of Nation Media Group and remains committed to responsible investment, sound corporate governance and sustainable development across the region.
Commenting on the development, the Chairman of Taifa Group, Mr Rostam Azizi, expressed his sincere appreciation to His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for authorising the resumption of Nation Media Group’s operations in Uganda. He also conveyed his gratitude to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, for his support throughout the engagement that led to this positive outcome, stating:
