To redefine the relevance of traditional media by offering a trusted alternative to social media.

Why this Mission

Social media has become the go-to source of news and information in many places. It is where most people find news and information. However, a lot of news and information on social media—unless it is on social media platforms of well-established news organisations or businesses/companies, etc—can be disinformation, fake news, lies and misinformation. It is becoming increasingly difficult to tell fact from fiction. Many news and information consumers are not discerning readers and struggle to tell a suspect source of information from one that is not and can be trusted.

That is how OJ-UGANDA.COM comes in. Not everyone will be reading OJ-UGANDA.COM, of course, but for readers interested in high-quality information, we are their trusted alternative to social media noise—and sometimes traditional media outlets which, because of a vested interest, may not be able to report facts as they are. We want readers who come to our website to be confident that everything they are reading has been fact-checked. Few journalists in Uganda are doing this. Our focus will not be news reporting of the kind done by daily newspapers, but we will be publishing public-interest news and interviews, and every single news story OJ-UGANDA.COM publishes will be deeply reported and obsessively verified.

Our Vision

To become the go-to platform for verified, factual news and information in Uganda while also cultivating a well-informed society where credible journalism triumphs over disinformation and misinformation, fake news and lies.

Our Target Audience

We created OJ-UGANDA.COM for educated, middle-class Ugandans who want trusted, high-quality information. Our reader is that woman or man who gets to see something attention-grabbing on social media—maybe a shooting of a public figure—and tries (before sharing) to verify by checking trusted news websites. Such a person is obviously a serious reader, someone who cares about credible information, about the truth. We are targeting that woman or man who gets to see, for example, a 700-word article at work and saves it on an application like Pocket so they can read it during their free time. In a nutshell, the reader we have in mind is someone who enjoys reading and values value-added information.
