Journalists continue to be harassed, surveilled, sued, physically attacked or imprisoned—and sometimes even tortured or killed—simply for doing their jobs, the UN secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, has said.

Mr Guterres made the comments on November 2 to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. He called for the protection of media professionals worldwide so they can safely carry out their essential work.

“Nothing should impede journalists’ ability to do their work, which is fundamental to human rights, democracy and the rule of law,” said the UN chief.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) launched an international campaign promoting the documentary “Inside Gaza”, where Israel has killed journalists reporting on the conflict.

The group said 18 screenings will be held around the world throughout November, including in Paris, Taipei, Dakar, Madrid, Bilbao, Pamplona, Burgos, Tunis, Berlin, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York and Rio de Janeiro.

The campaign seeks to highlight the essential work of Palestinian journalists, pay tribute to those killed by Israel for doing their job.

RSF also released a short film to accompany its 2026 Press Freedom Predators List featuring US President Donald Trump on the 2026 list. The film depicts a young Trump terrified by the idea of journalists holding power to account, bringing to life the campaign slogan, “Only one kind of story scares press freedom predators: a true one.”

The 2026 edition of the Press Freedom Predators List profiles 33 figures and forces that have violently attacked journalists and the right to information this year.

RSF said that since returning to the White House in 2025, the US president has ramped up his attacks against the press in an attempt to reduce journalism to political propaganda.

In a viral video, Mr Trump attacked Reuters White House correspondent Jacob Bogage and posted his photograph on Truth Social. It followed a confrontation over brief changes to the president’s campaign schedule.

On Truth Social, Mr Trump wrote: “Reuters (One of the Worst!) reporter.” The image also included text repeating remarks Trump directed at Mr Bogage during a Thursday exchange: “Put yourself in shape. You look like hell!”
