The National Unity Platform has said the Electoral Commission has yet to give it the national voters register even though there are only nine days left to polling day.
The party’s secretary general, Lewis Rubongoya, said in a statement dated January 6 that the EC has not only failed to share a paper copy of the updated voters register but it has also not “provided any lawful justification for this failure”.
“We write to demand that the Commission immediately provide NUP with a clean and updated paper copy of the Voters Register, and fully comply with all its other outstanding statutory obligations,” said Mr Rubongoya, who is gunning for the Kampala Central parliamentary seat.
The statement also referred to letters previously sent to the EC, including one dated December 11, 2025 about mandatory duties the commission has to perform under the Presidential Elections Act and another dated December 31 “protesting the duplication of tens of thousands of voters” in the register.

Julius Mucunguzi, the EC’s spokesperson, told this website via WhatsApp that all eight presidential candidates received a soft copy of the national voters register upon nomination, as required by the law.
“The law further states that before the elections, they [candidates] are to be given the final NVR [national voters register], which they are going to get.”
He said the candidates would receive the final register on January 7 but did not explain why there have been delays in delivering final copies.
The EC has come under criticism in the run-up to the election over the way it is organising the January 15th vote.
In particular, many voters and opposition politicians have questioned its directive that voters have to leave polling stations after casting their ballots.
The directive contravenes section 31 of the Presidential Elections Act. Article 7 (clause 4) says voters shall stand or sit at least 20 metres away after voting. It does not say they are not allowed anywhere near polling stations.
