10 business movies every Ugandan entrepreneur must watch

HUSTLING: Will Smith demonstrates why giving up is not a great option

Success leaves clues, and sometimes those clues are hidden in the most unexpected places—like your TV screen.

While you are here battling ka-capital issues and customers who “send later,” some of the best business lessons are playing out on screen. From high-stakes hustles to boardroom betrayals, these 10 movies will shake your entrepreneurial brain like a Rolex on a hot pan. Grab your popcorn and take notes!

1. The Pursuit of Happiness (2006)

Will Smith’s Chris Gardner is every Ugandan who left a “stable” government job (or refused to apply for one) to chase business dreams. Sleeping in bathrooms, selling medical scanners door to door—this is the definition of kuyiiya (hustling). If you think giving up is an option, watch this and rethink your life.

2. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) will teach you how to sell, convince and build an empire. But he will also teach you how greed and shortcuts will land you in handcuffs faster than a corrupt LC1 chairperson. Lesson? Make money, but do not lose your mind!

3. The Social Network (2010)

Mark Zuckerberg took a simple idea—connecting friends—and turned it into Facebook, one of the biggest companies in the world. But the real lesson? Be ready for betrayals, lawsuits and friends turning into enemies when money enters the chat.

4. Moneyball (2011) – Data will save you

Ugandan entrepreneurs love vibes and inshallah, but do you use data? Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) built a winning baseball team without overspending by using data. Instead of opening your ka-restaurant in a spot “because people pass there,” maybe check if those people even eat out!

5. The Founder (2016)

You love your local chips and chicken spot, but do you have a system? Ray Kroc took McDonald’s from a small restaurant to a worldwide brand—not because he cooked better, but because he had a scalable system. Stop frying the chicken yourself and think bigger!

6. Boiler Room (2000) – Learn to sell like a Pro

Sales are the lifeline of business, whether you sell cars, katogo or digital products. This movie will show you how to convince people, close deals and make money—but also warn you against selling fake dreams. Ugandans love a good scam. Do not be the fool on the wrong side.

7. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Jamal, a poor boy from the slums, wins a fortune on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” because of his life experiences. Entrepreneurs, nothing you go through is useless. That job you hate? That failure? It is all part of your business wisdom. Keep pushing.

8. War Dogs (2016)

This is the ultimate “if we fail, we fail together” movie. Two young guys land a $300m contract with the US army while chilling in Miami. The lesson? Opportunities are everywhere, even in war. Just do not get caught breaking the law.

9. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) – Pressure will either make you or break you

Ugandan entrepreneurs, you think you have pressure? Watch this movie. It is about a group of desperate real estate agents fighting to keep their jobs. If you cannot handle rejection, competition and the pressure of closing deals, business is not for you.

10. Chef (2014) – Passion + Business = Success

This one is for all Ugandans with hidden talents. Can you cook? Sew? Sing? Do nails? Jon Favreau’s character leaves his high-paying job to start a food truck, and it becomes a hit. If you love something, find a way to make money from it!

Movies will not build your business, but they will give you the mindset to win. Watch these, take note and notes and then go execute—because, in Uganda, nobody is coming to save you!
