Singer General Mega Dee announced on social media that he had hit another high note—this time in education.

His post on Facebook about a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) he obtained from California Intercontinental University received more than 5,000 reactions.

“From the rhythms of a humble musician’s struggle to the melodies of academic triumph, my journey has been nothing short of extraordinary,” wrote the US-based singer.

“This is academic excellence at its peak, earned with distinction, not bestowed as an honorary gesture.”

Mega Dee, whose real name is Amos Kigenyi, dedicated the degree to his wife, children and family, describing the achievement as proof of “resilience, faith, and relentless pursuit.”

While the news about Mega Dee’s degree has drawn admiration from his fans, it is silent on the kind of doctorate he got.

This website has been examining accreditation done by US universities and has found that California Intercontinental University is accredited by the Distant Education Accrediting Commission, a US Department of Education-recognised body that specialises in evaluating online and distance-learning institutions.

This means CIU conducts online courses and does not hold regional accreditation, which is the form most traditional US universities have.

Regional accreditation often affects credit transferability, reputation and eligibility for certain postgraduate programmes or government-funded employment.

CIU does not offer research PhDs, and students do not write dissertations in fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree.

While students who have completed PhDs at US universities with regional accreditation can teach at any university, Mega Dee cannot teach at any university—even in Uganda.

That is how different his Doctorate of Business Administration is.

EXPLAINER: Understanding Mega Dee’s Doctorate of Business Administration and DEAC accreditation

What is California Intercontinental University?

It is a private, for-profit university that delivers all its programmes online. It was founded in 1996 and focuses on flexible degrees for working professionals.

Is the university accredited?

Yes. CIU is accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), which is officially recognised by the US Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

That means the degree is legitimate—not a “fake” or “diploma mill.”

So why would anyone question the degree?

Because not all accreditation is equal. In the US, universities are typically accredited either regionally or nationally.

  • Regional accreditation (the older and more prestigious form) is held by Ivy League universities and many other well-established universities.
  • National accreditation (such as DEAC) focuses on online, vocational or career-focused schools.

While both are recognised, credits from nationally accredited schools often do not transfer easily to regionally accredited universities. Mega Dee’s Doctorate of Business Administration would not be accepted, for example, at Stanford or the University of Florida. Some employers and graduate programmes also prefer the regional kind.

Does that make Mega Dee’s degree invalid?

No. It means his degree is valid but situated in a different tier of US higher education—a legitimate online path, but not one that carries the same academic weight or prestige as a regionally accredited PhD.

For someone pursuing personal growth or applied leadership skills, it works fine. For someone targeting a university faculty post or a research-heavy career, it could be limiting.

Why do many students still choose DEAC-accredited schools?

Flexibility, affordability and accessibility. Many are adults balancing work and family. The learning is 100% online, and the admission process is less restrictive. For example, DEAC-accredited universities do not require GMAT or GRE—standardised tests used in the US and worldwide to assess applicants for graduate-level programmes.

Why is regional accreditation generally preferred?

Regional accreditation ensures:

  • Credit transferability across major universities.
  • Broader employer recognition in both the US and abroad.
  • Eligibility for federal financial aid and many government jobs.
In short, regional accreditation signals that the school meets the highest academic standards in its region.
  • What should Ugandans take away from Mega Dee’s story?

Accreditation matters. Before enrolling in any foreign university, verify who accredits it and what that means for your goals.

Mega Dee’s achievement is real—but so are the nuances around how the world values different kinds of degrees.
