Did Rwanda ever have a military officer called Fred Rwigyema, as Ugandans have commonly said and written for decades?

🔴 Claim

Rwanda had a senior military officer named Fred Rwigyema, who fought alongside Yoweri Museveni during the 1980s armed rebellion against Milton Obote’s government and later led the 1990 invasion of Rwanda. The name Fred Rwigyema has been widely used in Uganda since the bush war that brought Mr Museveni to power. Note: While this is not a matter of misinformation or disinformation (where intent to deceive matters), it is a factual clarification we are bringing to the attention of our (discerning) readers.

🔴 Verdict

Incorrect name. The spelling with a “y” is Uganda’s decades-old creation.

🔴 What we found

  • On Fred Rwigema’s tombstone at the National Heroes’ Mausoleum in Remera, Kigali, the Rwandan capital, the name written is Gisa Fred Rwigema, not Fred Rwigyema, as the screenshot below clearly shows.
  • Rwandan news outlets—from the state-owned newspaper the New Times to small publications to national records, websites, etc—use the name “Fred Rwigema”, not Rwigyema.
  • David Himbara, a former confidant of President Paul Kagame and now a vociferous critic living in exile, calls the war hero Fred Rwigema, not Rwigyema.
  • Radio BBC Gahuza and the website Gahuza, both affiliates of the BBC, the London-based broadcaster, use Rwigema, not Rwigyema.
  • The New York Times also uses the same spelling. Its articles from the early 1990s about the RPF’s invasion of Rwanda bear the name “Fred Rwigema.”
MISSPELLING: For decades, Ugandans have spelt Rwigema’s name with a “y”.

Rwigema was born in Rwanda, grew up in exile in Uganda and joined Museveni’s armed rebellion, becoming one of the military campaign’s heroes. On October 1, 1990, he deserted the Ugandan army and led the Rwandan Patriotic Army’s invasion of Rwanda. He was killed the following day.

Despite his close association with Uganda, neither Rwigema himself nor the Ugandan army ever formally corrected the widespread misspelling of his name—which is very surprising.

🔴 Conclusion

The correct spelling of the name of Rwanda’s fallen war hero is Fred Rwigema. The version commonly used in Uganda—Fred Rwigyema—is a persistent misspelling. Rwanda never had a military officer officially known as Rwigyema.
